Thanks, Dorrie, I've had a gratifying response to my posting about Machackemech records, including reference to "Church Life," which is new to me. But clearly the 200-or-so-page document I found on the shelf at OrCoGenSociety in Goshen NY ("Old Dutch Records of the Machackemech and Menissinck Churches," trans. by Ten Eyck, rev. & annotated by Nearpass) seems to be the "Church Life" you mention. Checking data to resolve contradictions with other sources about children of Jacobus Van Vliet and wife Margaret Palmatier will take some time. One pretty definite difference can be resolved, I think: Jacobus was reportedly born in 1738, not 10 years earlier in 1728. I'll report more later. Thanks again, Dorrie -- and others who signed in. --Bob Van Fleet Middletown NY

Both Jacobus’ will and the article I attached show the oldest son, John. I would like add him and his family and infant Solomon. I can’t include Margaret as mother.

I see that he is supposed to have had a son John. It is logical that the first son would have been Jan or a variant thereof, since that was Jacobus's father's name. I did not find an existing profile for the son. Is there one? If not, you now should be able to create one and connect it to both parents.

I sure would like to have some more solid evidence for John and his family connections. Profiles like this one (generated from a GEDCOM or other Ancestry import, full of unfriendly computer-generated source numbers that may or may not point to good sources) make me twitchy. This is why I spent some time working on identifying the sources cited and looking for good sources. I didn't get very far into his life yet.

The research notes in this profile include a christening date for John, at Machackemeck. I didn't find a baptism for John in the Machackemeck records (not in Vosburgh's compilation and not the NYGBR -- the text of these two sources is identical, but I checked both of them anyway), so I wonder where the claimed baptism date came from.

There are two entries in the 1800 census for men named Jacobus van Vliet in the town of Minisink, both apparently age 45 and above, so I wonder about the possibility of conflation of two different men.

They make me twitchy too and I steer away from them and make sure I have true sources on my end. I’d like to try to get all of my Ancestry stuff over here so my family and others can see it and benefit from it. Thank you so much for all of your hard work.

Van Fliet-1 and Van Vliet-24 appear to represent the same person because: I just uploaded this family. Many of the family documents list the name as Van Fliet. Sources are attached.
